Welcome to TEAM CHOWDER's fundraising homepage for the Samaritan's 5K, in loving memory of my dad, Jim Howder. This year's event is happening on Saturday, September 23rd, 10:00 am at Artesani Park,1255 Soldiers Field Rd. in Brighton, MA. We are participating in the 5K to raise funds and awareness for Samaritans, a suicide prevention organization serving Greater Boston and Metrowest. My main goal is to break the Stigma of Suicide. Let's do it together!
This year, I'd like to bring attention to the crisis with men ages 35-64. Last year Team CHOWDER had 3 men on the team. This year, I challenge us to double that with 6 men!
A recent rise in suicides in Massachusetts — an increase of 40 percent from 2004 to 2014 — is driven by a rise in middle-aged men taking their own lives, according to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. In fact, 40 percent of all people who die by suicide in the United States are men between the ages of 35 and 64. It’s a staggering number, especially since this demographic represents only 19 percent of the nation’s total population. All proceeds help fund Samaritans' life saving services, including our 24/7 Helplines, Community Education and Outreach, and Grief Support Services for those who have lost a loved one to suicide. These vital services are available locally to the families, friends and neighbors, free of charge. Samaritans answers calls from Greater Boston, MetroWest, the State Wide toll free number, and the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.
